Floors built for Dexter homes.
Dexter is the one town on our map that is not on the flat. It sits on Crowley’s Ridge, nineteen miles southwest of Sikeston, which puts it a little higher and a little better drained than the alluvial plain around it. About 7,900 people live here in Stoddard County, where US-60 crosses Route 25. The town was founded in 1873 and named, the story goes, after an early settler’s horse.
Dexter had 7,927 residents at the 2020 census, sits at about 390 feet on Crowley’s Ridge, and takes roughly 48 inches of rain a year in a humid subtropical climate. The Dexter Gymnasium was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2001. In July 2021 an EF2 tornado came through the town and damaged around 150 homes.
Being on the ridge changes the ground under a floor. Better drainage and firmer soil mean fewer of the seasonal slab movements you get out on the plain, so a rigid plank is generally an easier recommendation here than it is in a low-lying town a few miles east.
What we run into in Dexter
The rainfall is the part people underestimate. Forty-eight inches a year and a humid summer mean wood and laminate need to sit in the room they are going into before they are installed, so the boards reach the moisture content of the house rather than the moisture content of a truck. We build that wait into the schedule. It is unglamorous and it is the single cheapest way to avoid a floor that cups or gaps by the following season.
The 2021 tornado also left a lot of repaired and part-rebuilt houses in town. Rebuilt rooms often meet original rooms at a doorway, and the two sides are rarely at the same height. Transitions done properly there are the difference between a house that reads as finished and one that reads as patched.

Flooring in Dexter, questions
Do you come out to Dexter?
Yes — Dexter is about nineteen miles southwest of us and a regular run. The estimate is free and we bring the samples to your house.
Why do you want to leave the flooring in the house before installing it?
Because Dexter gets around 48 inches of rain a year and the summers are humid. Wood and laminate move with the moisture in the air. Letting the material sit in the room first means it settles at the room’s conditions instead of shrinking or cupping after it is down.
Half our house was rebuilt after the storm. Can you match the two halves?
That is a common job here after 2021. Rebuilt rooms rarely finish at exactly the same height as the original ones, so the honest answer is usually a well-chosen transition at the doorway rather than pretending the two floors are one plane. We will show you the options at the measure.
