Carpet is still what most people in Sikeston want in a bedroom, and it is the floor we sell more of than any other. It is warm, it is quiet, and it is the only surface that a child can sit on the floor and play on comfortably. The part that decides whether you are happy with it in five years is not usually the carpet you picked from the sample board — it is the pad underneath it and how well it was stretched. We bring the samples to your house, measure properly, take the old floor out, and fit it so the seams land where you will not look at them.

The pad matters more than the carpet

Why the cheap upgrade is underneath

Almost everyone spends their whole budget on the carpet and takes whatever pad is offered. It is the wrong way round. The pad is what the carpet flexes against every time somebody walks on it, and a carpet on a thin, under-specified pad wears out from underneath long before the fibre itself is finished.

A denser pad costs a little more per square yard and it is the single change that most extends the life of a mid-range carpet. If the budget is tight, we would rather step the carpet down one grade and put the difference into the pad than the other way around. That advice costs us money on the invoice and it is still the right advice.

Fibre and twist, in plain terms

Most carpet sold today is nylon or polyester. Nylon springs back better under furniture and heavy traffic; polyester takes colour beautifully and resists stains well, and it is usually the better value in a bedroom that does not see much traffic. Neither one is simply better than the other — they are better at different jobs.

The other number worth understanding is twist: how tightly the yarn is spun. A tightly twisted cut-pile holds its shape and resists the matted, flattened look in a hallway. A loose, soft pile feels wonderful underfoot and will show footprints in a busy room. When you rub a sample backwards and it looks tired straight away, that is what it will do in your hall.

Bedrooms and the front room

Bedrooms are where carpet is close to unbeatable. It is warm on a cold Bootheel morning, it deadens sound between floors and rooms, and nobody has ever complained about it beside a bed. Front rooms and dens go the same way for the same reasons, particularly in a house with children.

Stairs are the other place carpet earns its keep, both for grip and for the noise. Carpeted stairs are a specific skill — the fit around each nosing is what separates a good job from a loose one — and it usually pairs with the stair and trim work rather than being a separate conversation.

Where we would talk you out of it

We will tell you when carpet is the wrong choice. Entryways, kitchens, bathrooms and laundry rooms in this part of Missouri take mud in the spring and water most of the winter, and carpet in those rooms is a maintenance problem you will resent within a year. Those are rooms for a waterproof plank or tile.

The same goes for a house with a large indoor dog, or a rental that turns over regularly. Carpet can be the right answer in the bedrooms of both, but running it through the living areas of either is usually a decision somebody regrets.

Stretched properly, seamed where you will not see it

Power-stretched, not kicked in

Carpet that ripples a year after it is laid was not stretched hard enough when it went down. A knee-kicker alone does not develop enough tension across a room; a power stretcher does. It takes longer and it is the reason a floor stays flat instead of growing a wave down the middle of the hallway.

We also re-set the tack strip rather than reusing tired strip that has already given up its grip. It is a small material cost against the callback it prevents.

Seam placement is a design decision

Almost every room wider than twelve feet needs a seam somewhere. Where it goes is a choice, and it should be made deliberately: running with the light from the main window rather than across it, and away from the traffic path and the spot where you naturally stand when you walk in.

We plan the seams at the measure and tell you where they will fall before we cut anything, so there are no surprises on install day.

The old floor goes with us

Taking out the old carpet, pad and tack strip and hauling it away is part of the job, not a line you discover afterwards. Once it is up we can see the subfloor properly, and if there is a soft spot or a squeak that has been hiding under it for ten years, that is the moment to deal with it.

How much carpet do I actually need?

More than the room measurement suggests. Carpet comes in fixed roll widths, so the amount you buy depends on how the room lays out against that width, and there is always some waste. We measure the rooms at the estimate and give you a written figure based on the real layout rather than a square-foot guess.

Nylon or polyester?

Nylon recovers better under heavy traffic and furniture, so it suits hallways, stairs and busy family rooms. Polyester holds colour well, resists stains and is usually better value in a bedroom. We will bring both so you can feel the difference rather than take our word for it.

Can you carpet just one bedroom?

Yes. There is no minimum number of rooms. A single bedroom is a perfectly normal job and we would rather do one room well than talk you into more than you wanted.

Will you move the furniture?

Talk to us about it at the measure. We can usually handle normal household furniture as part of the job; things like a full waterbed, a gun safe or a piano need to be arranged separately so we can plan for it rather than discover it on the day.
