East Prairie began in 1883 as a stop on the St Louis Southwestern — the Cotton Belt — and was called Hibbard before it took its present name around 1900. Just under 3,000 people live here in Mississippi County, in the lowland stretch that runs from the Ozark foothills out to the Mississippi River. Route 80 connects the town west to Matthews and I-55, which is how we usually come in.

East Prairie had 2,943 residents at the 2020 census, down from 3,176 in 2010. The town was established in 1883 as a stop on the St Louis Southwestern Railway, known as the Cotton Belt, and was originally named Hibbard. It lies in the lowland area extending from the Ozark Highlands to the Mississippi River, with Route 80 running west toward Matthews and I-55.

Railway towns of that vintage share a housing pattern: compact lots near the old line, houses built for railway and farm families, and a century of alterations layered on top.
