Lilbourn is a small New Madrid County town of just under a thousand people, four miles west of New Madrid and a mile and a half north of US-62. It has had a post office since 1902 and takes its name from Lilbourn Lewis, an early settler. At under a square mile it is the kind of place where we can measure a house, go back for a second set of samples and still be done before lunch.
Lilbourn had 994 residents at the 2020 census, down 16.5 per cent from 2010, in a city of about 0.95 square miles in New Madrid County. It sits along Missouri Route D, a mile and a half north of US-62, with New Madrid four miles east.
In a town this size, most of the work is single rooms and single floors rather than whole-house jobs — a bedroom carpet, a kitchen that finally needs replacing, a hallway that has taken thirty years of traffic.
