About Portageville

Floors built for Portageville homes.

Portageville sits about five miles west of the Mississippi River, straddling the New Madrid and Pemiscot county line with roughly 2,900 residents. Interstate 55 runs through the eastern side of town, which makes it a straightforward trip for us from Sikeston. This is farm country on the flat alluvial plain, and the housing is mostly modest single-storey homes where a floor has to stand up to work boots and weather coming through the back door.

Portageville recorded 2,942 residents at the 2020 census. The city spans New Madrid and Pemiscot counties, sits roughly five miles west of the Mississippi, and has I-55 running through its eastern edge alongside US-61 and Route 162.

A farm town wants different things from a floor than a suburb does. The back door is the main door, and what comes through it is mud in spring, dust at harvest and water most of the winter. That is an argument for a waterproof plank through the entry, kitchen and hallway, and for keeping carpet where it is genuinely wanted — bedrooms and the front room.

What we run into in Portageville

Single-storey houses on the plain are usually straightforward to install: no stairs, few level changes, and long uninterrupted runs. Long runs are a good thing for the finished look, because fewer transitions means fewer places for the eye to catch. It does mean getting the direction right at the start, since a plank run the wrong way down a hallway is obvious forever.

Being on the flat also means the slabs and crawlspaces here move with the seasons more than they do up on the ridge at Dexter. We check flatness before quoting a click-lock product rather than after, so the number you get is the number that accounts for the floor you actually have.

Portageville FAQs

Flooring in Portageville, questions

What flooring holds up best in a farmhouse?

For the rooms that take the traffic — entry, kitchen, hallway — a waterproof luxury vinyl plank is usually the honest answer. It handles mud, water and grit far better than laminate or carpet. Then keep carpet for the bedrooms, where it is comfortable and it is not fighting the back door.
