East Prairie had 2,943 residents at the 2020 census, down from 3,176 in 2010. The town was established in 1883 as a stop on the St Louis Southwestern Railway, known as the Cotton Belt, and was originally named Hibbard. It lies in the lowland area extending from the Ozark Highlands to the Mississippi River, with Route 80 running west toward Matthews and I-55.

Railway towns of that vintage share a housing pattern: compact lots near the old line, houses built for railway and farm families, and a century of alterations layered on top. Under the carpet in a house like that you can find original wood, a sheet of hardboard from the seventies and a layer of vinyl from the nineties, all at once.

That is why we pull the old material out rather than laying over it. Every layer left in place raises the finished floor, and a floor that has crept up an inch is a floor where doors bind and the transition at every threshold becomes a trip hazard. Taking it back to a sound base costs a little more in labour and it is the difference between a floor that lasts and a floor that moves.

The lowland ground here is the same fine alluvial soil as the rest of the Bootheel, so the same rule applies: check the level and the moisture before committing to a rigid plank, and be straight with the customer about what the subfloor needs.
