Why We Bring the Samples to You

A carpet that looks warm grey under showroom lighting can go flat blue in your living room at four in the afternoon. That is the whole reason we work the way we do.

Flooring samples laid out for a customer to compare

There is a particular kind of disappointment that happens about a week after a floor goes in. Nobody did anything wrong. The installation is clean, the material is what was ordered, the seams are where they should be. It just is not the color the customer thought they bought.

That happens because of where the decision got made.

Showroom light is not your light

A flooring showroom is lit for selling. Bright, even, usually cool-toned overhead lighting, aimed down at samples standing upright on a rack. Almost nothing about that matches the room the floor is actually going into.

Your living room has one or two windows facing a particular direction. It has warm bulbs in the lamps. It has a couch and a rug and painted walls throwing color back at the floor. And the floor is flat on the ground, not standing at eye level, so you are seeing it at a completely different angle to the light.

Grey is where this bites hardest. Greys carry an undertone — some lean blue, some lean brown, some lean green — and the undertone is invisible under showroom lighting and impossible to miss at home. The same is true of the warm oaks in luxury vinyl plank, which can read golden in one room and orange in the next.

So we bring the rack to the room

We load the samples into the truck and lay them on your floor, in your light, next to your furniture. You look at them in the morning and again in the evening before anybody orders anything.

It sounds like a small change. In practice it does three things:

  • You see the real color, at the real angle, against your real walls
  • You can put a sample down and live with it for a few minutes instead of deciding at a rack
  • Everybody in the house gets a vote, including the ones who were not going to drive to a showroom

That last one matters more than people expect. Flooring is one of the few purchases where the person who cares most about the outcome is often not the person who went shopping.

What actually happens on the visit

It is not a sales call with a briefcase. We measure, we look at what is under the existing floor where we can, we talk about how the rooms get used, and we leave samples with you.

Measuring in person is not a formality either. Rooms are rarely square, carpet comes in fixed widths, and where the seams have to fall depends on the shape of the room and where the light comes in. That is a decision that gets made standing in the room with a tape measure, not from a floor plan.

We also want to see the transitions — where the new floor meets a doorway, a hearth, an existing floor you are keeping. Those junctions are where a job either looks finished or looks improvised, and they are much easier to plan for before the material is ordered.

Questions worth having ready

You do not need to prepare for the visit. But the conversation goes further if you have thought about a few things:

  • Which rooms take the most traffic, and whether shoes come off at the door
  • Whether there are pets, and what kind of mess they actually make
  • Whether anything under the current floor has ever been wet
  • What you are keeping in the room, so we can look at the floor next to it

And if you already know something is wrong under the existing floor — a soft spot, a squeak, a patch that has always felt different underfoot — say so early. It is not bad news. It is just something that has to be in the plan rather than discovered on installation day.

The estimate is free and it stays free

We do not charge for the visit and we do not charge for the measure. If you decide to think about it for two months, that is fine, and it is a normal outcome. Floors are not an impulse purchase and we would rather you got the color right than got it quickly.

We cover Sikeston and the surrounding towns across Scott and New Madrid counties — the full list is on the areas we serve page.
